Workers in the transport industry directly impact the environment at every stage of operation, from materials handling and waste disposal, to land and terrain damage and exhaust emissions.

Going green on the road

An industry that depends almost entirely on fossil fuels, chemicals and large machinery is facing an uphill battle to achieve greener practices, but it's an effort worth making.

Opportunities

A strong Environmental Management System (EMS) is a powerful new marketing tool. Transport companies such as Veolia Transport NSW that have implemented EMS use it to appeal to customers' green preferences, and to give strength to tenders and contract submissions in an increasingly green-preferential market.

Dislocation from customers is bad for business, and outdated practices that create excessive waste and pollutants are increasingly likely to be rejected by clients and buyers.

A greener transport and logistics industry stands a better chance of attracting new and better staff, and an industry that is able to diversify and meet change head on has a secure future.
